Hello, McFly.

What a day!

Well, well.  The Lakers stepped it up and pushed the series to Game 7 tonight!

..or so I heard.  I was sadly checking my phone for updates every 2 minutes while working here.  Containers 89, Mariko 67.

In addition.. happy Drake day!  I hope you reach wayyyyyyy back into your memory and try to recall how to actually go buy an album.  Good luck.  I’m pretty sure you can find instructions on the internet if you start to feel lost.

In addition.. the Cookin’ Soul boys and Don Cannon put their own spin on TML.

Poor Drizzy.. It’s gotta be pretty tough to get scrutinized and given the “sophomore slump” label when you’re releasing your first album.  Folks are saying that he may have been riding the hype waves for too long.  Let me preface this by saying that, like most people, I love love LOVED So Far Gone.  And I loved his work before he was e-famous.  Aaaaand I loved Degrassi.  Plus, I tore my ACL too.  As of now, I’m going back and forth between “man they overhyped it, I wanted to fall off of my chair after the first 16” and “I heart him.. he could rap a grocery list to me and I’d melt.”  I’m trying really hard not to be too biased.

I’m just finishing my very first listen (it’s been a long 3D day.. I’m just now getting back to my computer).  It’s definitely a less cohesive project than So Far Gone, which is ironic because of the whole mixtape/album progression that artists usually shoot for.  I have to make a conscious effort to NOT expect to be blown away on some Marshall Mathers, American Gangster, “now THAT’S how you come back” stuff.. and to remind myself of how long it takes most artists to “find themselves” once they’re officially in the game.  Plus, his punchlines/name-drops are SO SO fun to imitate out of context.  I’m so sci-fi.

But even with all of that in mind.. I still like it.  A lot.  Sure, there’s always room for improvement.. but he’s still stepping over most of the folks putting music out right now.  He makes it seem so effortless, which alternates between impressing me and frustrating me in a “man oh man, what if this guy really APPLIED himself?” kind of way.  I really look forward to his continued evolution.  I can’t tell if I just like individual songs (yayyyyyy a non-clubby/wtf Hov and Aubrey collab), or if I can actually say that I like “Thank Me Later” as a whole.. Usually I can tell immediately.

Starting tomorrow, it’s going through the “how many times can I play this all the way through without skipping a single track on my ipod/in my car” test.  I’ll report back with the results.

New Drake video.. finally, Aubrey puts some of his acting skills to use and gets a video together with some sort of storyline.  Say what you want about the way this song is Kanye’d.. but I actually like it. 🙂

Forever.

Hi haters, I’m back off of hiatus.  Apologies for  the inactivity.. I’m basically working every weeknight this month, while holding down the school/internship/homework/life thing.  I need a more blog-friendly lifestyle.

Anyway, here you go.  Travis Barker does it again.. this time to “Forever” by Drizzy/Yeezy/Weezy/Marshall.  I’m obsessed.

Check the 2dope writeup for more info.

I know there’s a bunch of discussion about the album, and I only got to listen to it twice today (driving to and from Pasadena).  Some people don’t like it.  Some people like it.  I like it, even though there are plenty of reasons why I shouldn’t.  I wouldn’t call it a very cohesive album, and I don’t think he needed to lean so much towards the styles of hip hop that are more trendy right now.. I wish a collaboration as potentially great as Jay-Z/Drake didn’t get wasted on a could be a club song song (even though I don’t mind the song), I strongly dislike a few of the hooks.. But I still enjoy the album anyway.  It didn’t do what Reasonable Doubt, The Black Album, or American Gangster did for me when I first pushed play.. but I’m definitely not as disappointed as a lot of other people I’ve heard.  To me, it’s like Fatburger.  You know it’s not the best you could be having, but it’s still good as a go-to meal when you’re hungry.  We’ll see if my opinion morphs as time goes on.

For old time’s sake:

PS I totally used to rock the jersey dress.

Sheselle totally killed it with their version of Drake’s “Best I Ever Had.”  And even MTV has to agree!  They even have a verse in Tagalog.  Excellent.

Donna Ibarra, Anna De Guzman, and Ruby Ibarra

Shouts to A.D. for the heads up.. He’s got some talented friends!

I realized that I never posted the new video that sparked the conversation that led to the Robyn post before this one.  Whoops.

Anyway, new Drizzy/Yeezy/Jamie/Dream called “Digital Girl,” scooped from Hyphen! 🙂

In addition to the videos I left on Hyphen’s comments section, “Digital Girl” also made me think about this guy:

..and speaking of Technological Romance..

Haha and in the spirit of reminiscing, this post is dedicated to AznRebelBalla23, my first online love from Sacramento.  We met in person first, so it wasn’t super shady.. and it was very wholesome.  He used to tell me where he’d take me on a first date.  Behind that red font, there was a sweetheart.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again.  I’ve loved Drake (a.k.a. Aubrey Graham, a.k.a. Jimmy Brooks from Degrassi) since the 9th grade.  And now he has a hit song, a record deal, a ridiculously good mixtape, aaaaaand a brand new music video.  With basketball and girls, so my hopes were high. It’s actually just a little basketball, and a lot of girls. Girls so big they look three-headed, actually. And the huddle/”the best” cheer was very corny.  I don’t really like the male coach/female player thing needs any more sexual (at)tention, but oh well.  And he could have used beautiful girls who could actually play basketball.   Sigh.  I still love him though.

Video in HD here.

Buuuuuut I still love him. And he has love for girls in sweatpants.  So I’m sold. I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again: if you can’t love me in sweatpants, you can’t love me at all. 🙂
