A good majority of the musicians I enjoy today exist because of Michael Jackson.  He was the musical revolution in human form.. and living proof that entertaining the public often means sacrificing your privacy, your childhood, and even your sanity.  I’m glad he’s finally free of the entertainment world on this Earth, and I’m so grateful for every mind he sparked along his journey.

My favorite memory:

[Parts 2 through 7 here]

Peace, MJ.  You’ll be missed.

Another Pomona grad, doing big things!

This video was totally swiped from SeeTee‘s blog.. so I might as well just copy/paste her text intro too.  Congrats, Laura!

Laura Kaneko, a friend and classmate from Pomona ‘07, got to do the intro for Michelle Obama at the 2009 National Conference on Volunteering and Service in San Francisco yesterday! So awesome! Congrats Laura! I’m sure Michelle Obama was great as well…haha.

QN5 Megashow ’09!

If you’re in New York in early August.. then you need to be here.  Every year, the my big brothers over at the QN5 family get together to put on an epic show.. all of the artists come together at a single venue and rock the laces right out of each fan’s shoes.  AND they bring special guests!

From the QN5 website:

The QN5 MEGASHOW is an annual destination event thrown exclusively by NYC’s independent hip hop label, QN5 Music, for the their fans. It is the only time the entire label’s roster converges on the same stage on the same night. QN5 fans (ie. Blue Schoolers) from all over the world make their pilgrimage to this event to celebrate all things baby blue and see one of the most energetic and entertaining shows in Hip Hop. This event has already torn down legendary spots such as CBGBs, BB Kings, The Roxy (LA) and now makes it’s NYC return at Highline Ballroom.

This year, CunninLynguists will be performing their 2006 classic, A Piece of Strange, in its ENTIRETY with Kentucky-based backing band, Club Dub – along with many more surprises you’ll just have to be there to see for yourself. With 2009 being QN5’s biggest year of releases to date, this is NOT to be missed. Get your tickets before it’s too late!

J. Lately’s mixtape is here!

..actually, it was here about three days ago.  I suck.

Anyway.. Most of you probably haven’t heard of him, but I’ve known him for a bit now.  He’s another one of Claremont‘s finest (P-Towwwwn), doing it big in the hip hop world.  And he’s a good guy.  And if you’re still not convinced, the mixtape is 2dopeboyz-approved and features people like Tunji, Co$$, and Bambu.  AND it’s free!

Summer is here.. I’m sure of it, because the Japanese festivals/carnivals/obons/matsuri are starting.  And apparently I wasn’t full from Andrew’s ShrimpFest ’09 (see previous post), so I headed over to the VJCC Carnival.  Again, I’ll let the pics speak for themselves.  And again, I only took pictures of food and art.

I love this time of year.. these festivals always provide a chance to reunite with the community, support system, and family with which I grew up.. to reconnect with old friends.. and to be reminded of how beautiful and important our culture, history, and traditions are.  Let’s keep it alive!

Shrimpin’ ain’t easy.

Yesterday afternoon, a bunch of us got together to celebrate Andrew’s birthday.. with a lot of spicy shrimp from The Boiling Crab.  Being me, I took lots of pictures of food, and only one picture of the birthday boy.  I was focused, mayne.
